Mattress Platforms

Common mattress platforms are box springs, slats, or a solid surface, often called a bunkie board.

Any of these platforms will work on our beds.

However, for the:

Trundle beds you can NOT use a box spring, due to the height limitations.

Bunk beds, we do not recommend box springs for the top bunk as it raises the bed higher than the safety rails can protect.

A solid surface, like a bunkie board, when attached to the bed, has the advantage of tying the corners of the bed frame together, making for a more solid bed.  This provides a solid platform securely fastened to the bed frame making it one solid unit.

For this reason, we recommend 3/4" thick plywood as bunkie boards.

Bunkie Boards can be heavy and awkward to handle in assembly, but do provide a very sturdy bed.

To save money, you can go to the home center and buy the 3/4 inch sheet stock yourself.  Have them cut it to these dimensions:

For the twin size bunks - 74½" x 38¼"

For the full size bunks -  74½" x 48"

For the twin trundle beds - 73-1/4" x 38¼"

For the full trundle beds - 73-1/4" x 48"

For convenience, you may prefer to have us get the plywood and cut it and pre-drill the screw holes.

Our prices per bunkie board:
